Talk by Dr. Nicole Hirschfelder, Universität Tübingen, and Yasmin Nasrudin, d.a.i. Tübingen.

The killing of George Floyd in 2020 brought the #BlackLivesMatter movement back into the spotlight and sparked the debate of race relations in the U.S. and beyond. Police violence is just one aspect of racial inequity that Black and Brown people have to deal with every day. In this presentation, Nicole Hirschfelder and Yasmin Nasrudin will examine current racial inequalities in the United States and Germany and the role of #BlackLivesMatter movement in their commitment to justice for all.

Dr. Nicole Hirschfelder is an associate professor for American Culture and Literature at the University of Tübingen. Hirschfelder completed her dissertation at University of Tübingen which was published as her first book titled, Oppression as Process: The Case of Bayard Rustin. Apart from her main areas of scholarship, she has also published and presented on the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Yasmin Nasrudin is program officer for school outreach and student advising at the German-American Institute Tübingen. She wrote her bachelor’s thesis on the patriarchal structures in the Black Civil Rights and #BlackLivesMatter movements. She co-initiated the initiative “Black History in Baden-Württemberg,†is the chairwoman of Blacks Connected e.V. and a board member of the Association of Elected Officials of African descent in Germany.
