Dr. Linda Parry (Textile Historian, former Deputy Keeper, Textile & Fashion Collections, Victoria & Albert Museum, London)
The Holy Grail tapestry series, designed by Burne-Jones for Stanmore Hall, Middlesex between 1890 and 1894, is now considered one of the most significant artistic achievements of late nineteenth century British art. It proved the last completed scheme in thirty years of Burne-Jones´s mastery of narrative cycles.
However, the success of the tapestries as works of art is not attributable to Burne-Jones alone. Instead one must acknowledge the very close, at times symbiotic, relationship that existed between the artist and his life-long friend William Morris. For it was Morris who commissioned the designs and Morris´s firm, Morris & company that transformed Burne-Jones´s drawings into successful woven wall hangings.
This lecture will consider this relationship more closely specifically the aesthetic ideals and working practices of the two in relation not only to the Holy Grail cycle but other tapestries produced by the Morris Company.
Dr. Linda Parry is a specialist in nineteenth century decorative arts. She worked for over thirty years in the textile department of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London concentrating on the nineteenth century British textile industry particularly the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Her first published article was on the tapestries of Burne-Jones, a subject she has studied for many years. Her books include William Morris Textiles (1983) and Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1988). While working at the V&A she organised two major exhibitions "William Morris"(1996) and "International Arts and Crafts" (2005) and edited the accompanying publications.
